The Urban95 initiative by the Bernard van Leer Foundation in Bogotá, Colombia.

Through a collaboration with Bogotá’s city government and Bloomberg Associates, the project introduced “children’s priority zones” to create safe, accessible, and multifunctional play spaces in underserved neighbourhoods. This project specifically targeted young children’s needs in public spaces, considering urban risks like traffic, environmental hazards, and a lack of green spaces.

In the pilot zone, located in the San Francisco district, interventions included creating safe crossings, transforming vacant areas into community gardens, and establishing engaging, child-friendly play environments. These spaces also served broader purposes, such as building social cohesion and increasing environmental resilience, through the integration of nature-based solutions and community-led governance structures. The program expanded to other cities, including Recife, Brazil, allowing cross-regional learning and adaptation for diverse contexts.
